University of Kelaniya
The University of Kelaniya (UoK) is one of Sri Lanka’s fifteen Universities. It
was established in 1959, organizing as the Vidyalankara University of Ceylon from
the Vidyalankara Pirivena. It is a premier seat of learning in the country providing
opportunities for higher education in a broader spectrum of disciplines. It comprises
of six faculties, i.e. Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Medicine, Commerce
and Management Studies. The university has more than 9000 full time undergraduates
in various study programs, 500 postgraduate students and over 25000 candidates registered
for external degrees. 350 academic staff and 560 non- academic staff are employed
to ensure the high academic standard and the efficient functioning of the academic
programme. It’s offering student’s accommodation, opportunities for social functions
and excellent computing, library and lecturing facilities. The University is located
at Dalugama on the Colombo-Kandy highway, just 10km away from the Colombo City centre.

Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies
The Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS) is one of six
faculties at the University of Kelaniya and it is one of leading center for teaching
and research in commerce and management. Since it is establishment in 1995, the
faculty has shown continues commitment to excellence and leadership in research
and education. The faculty has a global focus and its staff is actively linked with
business both nationally and internationally. The Faculty prides it self on its
national reputation. The faculty has approximately 50 full time academic staff at
the rank of lecturer and above, three of whom obtained PhDs. They are recognized
internationally for their research. The FCMS is the largest faculty in terms of
student population. At present it has 2000 students. The Principal aims of the faculty
are, • To conduct and disseminate research of international standing in the discipline
of Accounting, Finance, Economics, Econometrics, HRM, Management and Marketing.
• To provide the highest quality of teaching and training to students. • To develop
a close and mutually beneficial relationship with Business, Government, the non-profit
sector and Professions.

Department of Accountancy
The Department of Accountancy
(DoA) is one of four department in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya. The Department was established in 1995 under the name of Accountancy & Human
Resource Management. In 1998, the Accountancy unit was established under the same
department and in 1999 Accountancy unit was upgraded to a full departmental status
and named as “Department of Accountancy” It attracts the highest
caliber of academic staff and has established as a leader in research and undergraduate
programmes. Many academic staff of the department has experience in industry and
the profession and provides advice as consultants and experts and thus is able to
blend the theoretical with the practical knowledge in their teaching. Part of the
success of the department has been the ability to adept its programme to meet the
changing demands of industry and the profession
AIMS and OBJECTIVES The overall aims of the
Accountancy/finance study programmes are to:
a) Recruit and retain students
who demonstrate a potential for success in the field of Accountancy/Finance
b) Enhance students’ oral and written communication skills, and convey to them new
developments in the accounting profession and analytical skills through excellence
in teaching
c) Provide frequent and meaningful opportunities for faculty and students to interact
with members of the Accountancy profession and the corporate CEO’s.
d) Engender in students through classroom and other experiences appropriate ethical
and professional behavior, a desire for
life long learning, and respect for diverse demographic and cultural background
and thereby ensure the social and intercultural harmony.
e) Improve the relevance and timeliness of teaching as well as the technical competency
of faculty by applying and utilizing modern teaching equipment, developing innovative
educational materials and techniques.
f) Envisage continuous improvement in the programme through faculty development
and by regularly evaluating and updating the curriculum and course content.
g) Foster an environment for students
and graduates that is conducive to successful job opportunity and career development.
h) Create an environment

Accountancy Students’ Association (ASAK)
ASAK is the pioneer students’ movement in the Commerce and Management
Faculty to register as an educational association, specializing in Accountancy,
which addressed a long awaited need. Our underlying philosophy is to provide academic
services with a professional orientation through the interaction with public and
corporate sector organizations, and wider society. Vision of ASAK To shape and sharp
the students of the department of accountancy, thereby to enable them to go into
the society as true professionals, by improving educational standards and cooperating
with the wider society. Mission of ASAK To deliver the society a loyal citizen who
is equipped with up to date knowledge, skills and super positive attitudes, by continuous
involvement in student development activates which caters the requirements of tomorrow’s
world.
Objectives of ASAK
- Enhancement of knowledge, skills and attitudes of the
members, thereby improve their personalities and capabilities.
- Publication of
educational material, i.e. Accountancy Journal, course manuals etc.
- Develop knowledge
of the membership by conducting seminars and workshops.
- Provide academic services
with a professional orientation through the interaction with the private sector.
- Promote activities, which help the development of the Association.
- Increase
the employability of the membership; thereby widen their career prospects .
- Accountancy
Students Association is the only students’ association of the Department, whose
office bearers are selected from within the students of the Department annually.
- The Association governs three committees, namely the Executive Committee, Superior
Executive Committee, and the Superior Advisory Committee.
- The Association, which
was established a few months earlier, has done many activities during a very short
period of time, for the development o the students of the Department.
Students are

- Advanced training through Internship in Accounting and Finance. Work
experience enriches the exchange of knowledge and discussion within the Lecture
room.
- Provides a specialist in-depth understanding of core areas financial institutions,
financial decision making, business financial management, and security analysis
and portfolio management companies, leasing companies and mutual funds for students
with a quantitative background.
- Enhances communication, IT presentation, writing
of research and technical skills in the context of financial issues.
- Introduces
financial economic techniques such as Risk Management Methods, Derivatives, Pricing
and Portfolio Management.
- Provides an opportunity to critically analyze economic
events and their impact on financial markets, making extensive use of Financial
Economics, Econometrics software and data sources.
- Prepares Graduates for specialist
quantitatively-orientated careers in financial economics, research in forecasting
as well as those in the areas of Business Management, Finance, Banking and Accountancy
